Burying the Hatchet

Illustrated by Johanna Marie Camacho

After many years of being preserved in a refrigerator, our new President Rodrigo Roa Duterte permits the corpse of Ferdinand Marcos to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. Finally, this tension between the Marcos Family and the people would be lifted.

It is a common knowledge to everyone the good and the bad deeds of our late President as he ruled this country for many years bearing an iron fist. The death penalties have caused numerous executions and the death toll is high, but this height is comparable to our economic status during his reign. The dollar-peso exchange rates were almost equal. The country is flourishing with wealth that he passed the law for 13th month pay. Curfews are also strictly implemented so the people are more discipled than today.

The Marcos Burial is a very controversial subject today because the people do not forget. People who hold grudges are protesting against the burial, stating that he is a dictator and not a hero. But the real reason is because the moment we bury the hatchet, we are also forgetting the deaths of many innocent lives who died during Martial Law. We are forgetting the wealth stolen from the Filipino people. And this fact scares the nation.

Let the burial happen! Is this grudge held too long to let go? We can never return what’s already gone. We need to start our way to the top again. We should live out the present and forget the past so we can have a successful future.
