The grade 9 journalism students took the morning slot under the supervision of Mrs. Carlyn Biluan, English teacher while the grade 10 students had the afternoon session under the supervision of Mr. Marlon Cruz and Mrs. Erlinda Reyes, School Paper Advisers in English and Filipino.
The “LEARN Program” which stands for Learning Experience Acquired through Reading Newspaper is a priority project of The Philippine Star which aims to give students an idea on how to write their own newspaper or article and to bring back the habit of reading.
Gillian Gacuma, project specialist and contributing writer of the said newspaper explained the importance of news in our daily lives and he expanded more about the “LEARN Program.”
“We are here because we want to expose the students with daily newspaper. Through that we hope to achieve our goal to inspire students to pursue their writing skills and of course to bring back the habit of reading” Gacuma said in an interview.
He also said that they don’t choose which school to give the seminar. Sometimes they approach the school, sometimes the school contacts them and that they’ve been doing this for almost two years.
Some of the students who participated in the program gave positive feedback and said that the seminar helped them a lot in improving their writing skills while some said that the seminar built teamwork among one another to easily perform the task.
The Pioneer team who participated in the afternoon session was adjudged ‘Best in Mock-up Newspaper’ and was also recognized in terms of editorial and feature writing as well as in lay-outing.
