Lucila Artuyo – Redefining Principalship
“To develop the students’ love for education and embrace it”
These were the words uttered by Mrs. Lucila G. Artuyo, SJNHS’ current principal, as she proudly state that she is to change the ways of the school and make education worth waking up for the valued students of the campus. She was once a teacher like the rest of the faculty, but with such great leadership and capabilities, the certainty of becoming a school principal is beyond evaluations. With great wisdom, it is without question that she’s now the principal.
Mrs. Artuyo didn’t have it all during her youth. Her mother was a laundry woman and her father was a waiter so she had to work hard and help her family. She was one of eight children - imagine how difficult that was. Her hard work seemed to be paying off though. She is now the principal of the lone secondary public school in San Juan.
Responsible, hard-working, and caring – these were some of the remarks on Mrs. Artuyo by Mrs. Rowena Cruz, head of the Social Studies Department and also a co-teacher of Mrs. Artuyo during her teaching stint in SJNHS. Mrs. Cruz mentioned that “Ma’am Lucie” was a disciplinarian back in the old days; she never enters a classroom without her lesson plans. Mrs. Cruz also sees Mrs. Artuyo as a friend. Her transparency is quite admirable,
“She was always caring”, said Mrs. Cruz. With a simple rub on your back, she could tell that Mrs.Artuyo also feels their tiredness at work as if it links a connection between them.
Chrixia Anne Maraya, a student from 10 – Rizal and also the current vice president of SSG also says that she could see a tremendous improvement ahead of time during the term of Mrs. Artuyo.
“She is one of a kind.” said Chrixia, “She does her job well as a principal, yes, but the way she talks is very different. She always does it in a heart-warming manner”. Chrixia puts up her trust on Mrs. Artuyo and she believes that while the campus is under Mrs. Artuyo’s management, great things are guaranteed to happen.
One can easily tell that Mrs. Artuyo is going to lead the school to a brighter, rather luminous future. She’s not the typical kind of principal who implement rules just for the sake of doing the job. She attends several formal occasions where her presence is needed. She does some other things beyond her job. She doesn’t stay all day long in her office talking on the phone. She can be seen roaming around the campus trying to check what’s going on in every classroom and sometimes she is seen at the school entrance in the morning awaiting her beloved students as they come to their classes. Hopefully teachers and students alike could look up to her as an inspiration and something that could remind everyone why we should love and embrace education
